What is mLM?

mLM stands for microcystic lymphatic malformation. It is a serious genetic disease that can cause very small fluid-filled cysts or lesions to appear on certain areas of the body, including the skin.

Is mLM a form of cancer?

No. Even though mLM involves growths on the skin, it is non-cancerous.
‍

What causes mLM?

In most cases, mLM is caused by a variation in a person's genes. This variation makes the tiny tubes that carry fluid in the body grow out of control. When they bunch up, they may form small cysts (called microcysts) on the surface of the skin.

When do people usually get mLM?

Doctors usually identify mLM at birth. The condition can change or progress as a child gets older, especially when they become a teenager.

What does mLM look like?

When mLM presents on the skin, it can look like raised, multicolored sores or blisters. These sores might bleed or leak fluid. Sometimes, there is also swelling under the skin.

Does mLM hurt?

Yes, mLM can be painful. The sores can also be sensitive, itchy, or easily infected.
‍

Is mLM contagious?

No. mLM is not contagious.

Can mLM be mistaken for other skin problems?

Yes. Because of how it looks, mLM can sometimes be confused with other conditions, like birthmarks, rashes, warts, blisters, or even skin cancer. Children with mLM should be evaluated by a doctor or a team of specialists with expertise in the management of these conditions.

Are there any FDA-approved treatments for mLM?

Right now, there are no treatments approved by the FDA for mLM.

How is mLM diagnosed and treated?

In addition to a physical exam, a doctor may order “imaging” (like an ultrasound or MRI). There are no FDA-approved treatments and recommendations differ for each patient. Research is ongoing to identify and develop effective therapies for treating mLM.
